In this podcast Nicole Ezer, MD, speaks on the increased rate of lung cancer in Rouyn-Noranda. The copper smelter in this city emits a dangerous level of arsenic. Cadmium and nickel are also emanated by the smelter but to a lesser degree. These known carcinogens accumulate in the lungs, affecting the genes with long-term exposure. Smokers have an added risk. Also at play is an increased level of radon, also emitted by the smelter, which is found in the soil and is another cause of lung cancer.
Nicole Ezer, MD is a respirologist and researcher in the RESP Program of the RI-MUHC.
