Sustaining Excellence: Supporting Breakthrough Research

In Spring 2025, the Research Institute of the McGill University Health Centre (RI-MUHC) launched the inaugural Sustaining Excellence Grants Program to support outstanding researchers whose projects ranked in the top 40% of Canadian Institutes of Health Research competitions but were not funded.

Developed in collaboration with the McGill University Health Centre Foundation, the Montreal General Hospital Foundation, and the Montreal Children’s Hospital Foundation, this initiative provides critical bridge funding to help researchers maintain momentum, strengthen their proposals, and remain competitive in future national competitions.

Researchers from the RESP program were among the inaugural recipients, leading innovative projects in respiratory health, infectious diseases, and precision medicine:

Larry Lands is advancing prime editing approaches for cystic fibrosis, targeting genetic variants that do not respond to current therapies.
Arnold Kristof is investigating cell signaling pathways in lymphangioleiomyomatosis, a rare lung disease, to uncover new therapeutic targets.
Salman Qureshi is characterizing novel genes involved in host resistance to fungal infections, with potential to improve treatment strategies.
Maziar Divangahi is exploring trained immunity and lipid mediators (eicosanoids) to enhance immune responses against influenza A virus.

New Chair of the Department of Critical Care Medicine Appointed

Dr. Salman Qureshi has been appointed Chair of the Department of Critical Care Medicine at McGill University’s Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences, effective October 1, 2024. A highly accomplished physician and researcher, Dr. Qureshi holds multiple specialist certifications and has extensive training from institutions including McGill, Yale, and the Mayo Clinic. He currently serves as Associate Professor of Medicine, Research Director at the Meakins-Christie Labs, and Medical Director of Respiratory Therapy at the MUHC. Recognized for excellence in teaching and research in innate immunity, he has supervised numerous trainees and authored over 60 peer-reviewed publications. As Chair, he will oversee research, education, strategic planning, and faculty development within the Department.

COVID-19 Need for Coordinated Action

Dr. Salman Qureshi and colleagues from the Critical Care – Infectious Diseases Network in Canada speak to the critical actions needed as we experience this public health crisis.

Canadian leaders can reduce the damage caused by COVID-19 to Canadians and Canadian society by paying close attention to decisions taken in countries currently experiencing severe outbreaks. Strategies to mitigate the spread of the virus amongst the population, minimizing the strain of our healthcare system at any one time, coupled with a sharing of resources across boundaries as the demand for health-care fluctuates, will together play an important role on the ultimate long-term effect of this virus on our society.
